Ed,
While this service is a great start, in the description it clearly
states that this is to be used to TEST developed solutions, not as a
product development environment. Kind of a catch-22 at this point, w/o
other access to an IBM system, you won't have a product to test.

I've seen developers use this facility to develop their products IIRC, SAS used it a few years back to develop the 64-bit support for their C/C++ compilers. Presumably, they negotiated more favorable pricing terms than those offered to more casual users.

Also, to clarify, this service isn't new. I've been using it since some release of MVS/ESA V4 (1992?). It's essentially "time sharing" for the upcoming release of the operating system (running under VM).

IBM configures the base system and keeps it current with the latest driver(s) and/or maintenance. And, the people in Dallas, TX that do the work are "top notch"! You IPL and customize your VM guest system and, of course, pay for the cycles.

The other offering is running a system "in house" from local tape. They send you new tapes every month or so; you reload the operating system.

I had always assumed that nearly all serious ISVs used one or the other or both of these early development/testing options. I may have been wrong.
