space. I think that Clark Morris's statement that compressing "may foul up the compression algorithm" did not mean that the algorithm wouldn't work, but that it might yield non-optimal results. >> Many folks have spent lifetimes analyzing this stuff for all types of dasd and data. I got 71,000 hits on Google and 51 hits on _www.almaden.ibm.com _ (http://www.almaden.ibm.com ) (ARC) with just 'DASD Compression' for search argument. It's complicated beyond heuristic metaphors and simplistic analogies. It manifests itself differently to VSAM and DB/2 Linear VSAM. The only thing I know for sure is it's different for each shop. It can save you money on hardware and software licensing if properly implemented or can have a negative impact on response time and service levels. If you don't have a TPNS benchmark set up can implement in phases by application or dataset sizes grouped to ACS rules. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
