It's now a bit of a puzzle how you got your "copy and paste" from the z/OS client.

I also realise now that, when this thread was last active - all of a week ago, it seems much longer, I had misread your "z/OS" as "OS/2" - yet another case of reading one sequence of letters and understanding another - just about.

I have never seen this (it has worked on MVS, OS/390,and works on z/OS 1.8): Isn't the message you get an answer from the FTP server you logged on (maybe
an Unix and not z/OS FTP server)?

You're right.  Apparently z/OS treats "SITE" as "quote SITE".  I hadn't
understood that, and misgeneralized from the behavior of other
clients which reqire the long form to issue the SITE command to the
server.

Again, there's no RFC governing the behavior of clients.
