RIGHT!

And then every application can write its own optimized I/O subroutine
library, to "cut out the fat" from the generic I/O solution. And its own
customized mathematics subroutine library. And its own customized memory
manager. Oh, wait, in a virtual environment, just take the entire memory
space and don't bother with any management at all.

Gee, didn't we have this with the 1401?
