There was a company in the Hartford, CT area years ago that had a seven year lease on their processor. It caused them to remain back-level for a long time. Based on IBM's aggressive schedule, I think three years is about the max shops should consider. IBM tends to offer attractive upgrade packages to lessen the impact of rapid obsolescence.
