Something even worse could also happen.  Your system doesn't crash,  and 
whatever software was using that 
piece of storage continues to use that piece of storage, sooner or later  
that freed storage is gotten by another 
process, filled with different data, and the original software trusts and  
uses the new, corrupted data.
