We recently acquired a refurbished Sun/STK 9490 Timberline (3490 clone). The purchase/shipping documents indicate the ESCON interface is a separate component. Looking at the guts confirms the interface is physically separate from the drive. All of which implies there are other interfaces that could be used. I don't know if a FICON interface is one of the options but this might lead you in the right direction.
