Peter,

We almost got a z9 towards the end of the 1st quarter of 2007. At the
time IBM Ireland needed to boost it's sales figures for the 1st quarter,
and were prepared to give is loads of software for up to 3-years free of
charge. The z890 we currently have come from a canceled deal in the UK
and they had to get rid of it quite quick. The ESS-800 that came with it
still had the additional arrays inside when it hit our server floor.
This deal came with File Manager v5, Fault Analyzer, Debug Tool Free,
and Tivoli Workload Scheduler 8.2 free for 3 years. So in my opinion it
all depends when you order and who the circumstances surrounding your
order. Try and negotiate for capacity based license charges if you do
not already have it. It can make a difference if you have a few IBM
software products.

Regards

Herbie

Subject: Getting the best deal on mainframe spends

************* Cross posted to IBM Main and LPAR Pricing ****************

I am looking for a view as to how people work out if they are getting a
good deal on purchases of new mainframe capacity (whole CEC's or extra
capacity). Sometimes it feels to me a bit like buying a car - it depends

on how good a bargainer you are how good a deal you get - and even then
you can guarantee you'll find someone else who has got a better deal.

We were looking to use analyst information as to what we could expect to

pay, but have found that not to be an accurate method in that the guide
prices from the analysts seem way below what we are actually getting. So
I
am looking for guidance on what others do. Id specifically like anything

you can answer on the following:

1) Do you use analysts prices - if so which analysts do you use
(Gartner,
Forrester, A-nother)

2) How close do you get to the analysts recommended price

3) Have you ever seen a published list price for IBM CEC's and extra
capacity (ie extra CP's, Memory, channels)

4) What is your approach to negotiating the best deal and how do you
know
you've got a good one

I'll happily take off-line emails or phone calls if people are not
comfortable with sharing this information in open forum
