That's a lot like asking "How high is the sky?" Much depends on the
number of datasets you envision on the volume. I always chose the
most heavily used volumes in the farm, looked at the dataset
counts, then doubled the total. I always figured that a VTOC that
was half-full was ideal for the general case. I generally let the
utility set the size for the index; never had a problem there.
Rick,
Good explanation. The one (or so exception to the rule is ML1
volumes). I found out that there always seems to be plenty of small
datasets (even if you use SDSP) that will fill up the VTOC. In my
small experience I used 3 times the amount of the TSO volume. After 6
months I ran out of VTOC space and I increased it to 5 times. This is
very shop dependent, IMO. In any case ML1 should be considered the
exception to the rule and up whatever you come up with. If you have
plenty of space you might not be so generous. Just remember that
adding VTOC space is not easy in all cases, so be generous. I believe
with ICKDSF (and FDR) you can add vtoc space a little easier. I am of
the opinion that being generous saves at least one middle of the
night call a year.
