------------------<snip>---------------------
In the late 1980's, Gartner predicted that any company
that didn't move from the mainframe to client/server
would not be in business for very long.
In the mid-to-late 1990's, the same analyst said that
companies were having problems migrating to c/s, and
they had probably jumped on the bandwagon too soon.
And in the mid-to-late 2000's, management still
blindly believes in the predictions of said company...
---------------------<unsnip>--------------------
I respectfully submit that Gartner Group is NOT the only "pundit" that
is quoted to the exclusion of all else. Far too many management people
are more willing to believe the press, as opposed to listening to their
own staff. Somehow (I don't have a "silver bullet" answer), we need to
educate IT management to the fact that very few shops are the ideal shop
that Gartner seems to assume. Every company has its own needs and the
over IT environment needs to be tailored to those needs, regardless of
the acual platform chosen. All too often, a senior manager will get a
"fixation" on a particular platform, ignoring all others, to the
ultimate detriment of his company.
Be afraid. Be very afraid. But also be VOCAL and HONEST.
