I depends on how often you have to do this.
Since, I've rarely had Storage Groups shrink, so I don't see a need.

But, if you do, rather than spend the effort on an exit:

1. Drain the volume (ie: mark it ineligible for new allocation).
2. Wait until:
   a. It empties normally, or
   b. HMIG/FDR/DFDSS move data to other volumes
3. Re-claim the volume
