How are your sessions defined on the HMC? Tammi Marsan

The consoles usually disconnect in a group, all those on the same channel path / I/O card. ***Two questions***, why are these disconnecting, and after they disconnect, why are they not reconnecting. Either question answered solves this. The VTAM sessions reconnect to a logon screen, and the sessions do not reconnect. In most cases we have to vary the address as Console to recover. We have a half dozen Consoles and alternates, and another half dozen VTAM sessions, three of each for two z/OS 1.7 (soon 1.9) LPARs. We have these separated on two channel paths, to different z/890 I/O cards, connecting to a Network switch, and the 6 PCs with the sessions, using TN3270 Plus Session software from SDI (sdisw.com). Nothing else is on this Internal LAN. Originally we thought a bad network card on one of the PCs was bringing the consoles down. We had a network card and a PC replaced. We thought this was a solution at one point. Disconnects then seemed to occur related to IPLs, and we tried looking for something that might be causing this. It no longer looks related to IPLs. Hardware support replaced one of the two I/O cards on the z/890, that they had seen the most errors on. The consoles went down later that same night again on that same channel. We are now thinking only this one channel is having the problem, and will be using the other "good" channel almost exclusively to see if this is true. We previously had the connection to z/OS set as AUTO and the connection to PCs as AUTO. At the recommendation of our Network group, we changed the settings between z/OS & the switch to Full Duplex, and left the settings between the switch and the PCs as AUTO. This did not resolve the disconnect problem. Our Network group now says they see NO errors on these lines. They see the disconnects, which they feel are related to restarting the sessions, but they think the disconnected Console sessions are probably from Timeout or Keepalive or some other settings in z/OS? I was hoping that surely many, most, or all shops are now using ICC consoles, and someone might recognize these symptoms. I am the third person here to tackle the ICC Console setup Redbook. The implication is that these consoles should be quite error free. We have not had anything like that so far.
