Hi,

In the past year I have migrated 2 customers from MVS/XA to z/OS 1.9 and one
all the way from MVS/SP 1.1 to z/OS 1.8. I also migrated 3 more OS/390
sites, but they were 2.7 and two 2.10's. I did run into a few problems with
the very old systems, but found out very quickly that the stand-alone
version of DF/DSS works quite nicely for the full volume backups that had
issues.

There were also some issues with device types, (one site was still running
3350's and 3380's), but I was able to get around that via logical backups.

If you want to contact me offline, I'd be happy to discuss some of the
problems that you might run into, but you will find that it's not really
that big a deal to migrate the bulk of your system, the biggest problems
will come with the products and programs that are no longer supported that
you have to find replacements for. In my case, I have a large library of
utilities that are always a big help, but I also ended up writing a lot of
code for those conversions. For the most part I had to look at what exits
and installation written code that they were running and make sure that they
had the same functionality under z/OS. In some cases, it's now built-in to
the system, but there are always installation written code that has to be
upgraded.

Proper planning is the key. Having completed so many migrations, I've
learned a lot of lessons on what NOT to do.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to run your old OS/390 on a separate LPAR
of your new box. It will mostly IPL, but you'll be sorry with the results.:)

How long are you going to be able to keep your old system active? I know
this sounds strange, but you can install z/OS 1.4 (it still is available if
you know who to ask) on your old box in a small LPAR and use the new system
to backup everything and also as a convenient test bed while your waiting
for the new box to arrive.
