You can check the DEVTYPE value. In the past I simply displayed catalog 
entries for know tapes of the type that I was interested in. I looked 
online and found a table of values.

I only have two tape types left to deal with and both are X'78048083' 
which is 3590-1. Tape types virtual simulating 3590 and 3592.
