Well, it is the *IBM* standard. It's definitely not what I'm used to in Linux. 
In Linux, this particular directory, at least for Apache, ends up in /var/www. 
IBM also tends to put "software" in /usr/lpp/..product.. and I'm used to it 
being in /opt/..product.. . <sigh> I wonder what it is in AIX. I don't know, 
but wouldn't be surprised if z/OS wasn't highly influenced by AIX in some of 
these things.

I guess another reason that IBM places it in /usr is that /usr is a 
system-specific filesystem via $SYSNAME. This allows the same path on all 
systems while allowing system-specific software levels to be installed.
