I think there are two issues: 1. REXX variables do not act like they do in any other language. The default of x == 'X' is an invitation to make land mines.
2. Documentation is really tough to get right. Not enough, and it's confusing; too much, and tl;dr kicks in. And that's just the problem with good, accurate documentation.
