Fortunately I didn't have to put my foot down. We also only use the offline interceptor. I agree that the SP folks only understand AD so when they brought it in, they dropped the mainframe manual on my desk and said "here, install this and let us know when it's done" so I got free rein and made the 'executive decision' to only use the offline interceptor.
