Hmmm... Well, first of all, "display" doesn't "DO" anything, you need to use the EXECUTE parm instead, plus just doing ML2 won't really help your BACKUPS. You also need to expire the backup volumes via a completely different command.
When you say a percent of zero, that only frees up volumes with zero percent used, so if you have 100 volumes with one or two small datasets on them, they will never be freed up. If you say 100 percent, then you will recycle every tape whether they are empty or full (just so you know, that's not a good idea unless you are changing volumes for some reason and need to move it all). I have been at sites that never had expired their backups and one run would release hundreds of thousands of obsolete datasets. You probably need to run the expirebv and recycle commands on a weekly basis. As for what percentage to use, I normally use 25%, but I sometimes use a higher number if there is a reason for it. Most sites are using virtual tape, so unless number of tapes being used is a big deal you really don't need to be overly aggressive. That said, you will probably find that most people use a higher number than 25%, but it's completely up to the person who is taking care of HSM, and how they feel about scheduling the job. Just make sure that whatever ID schedules the job is in the HSM parms to be allowed to do so or you will wonder why nothing ever gets done when you run the job. :) I think if you do a google search you will find a presentation that rocket software (or someone else did) that gives you some rules of thumb and (more importantly) why.
