A couple of folks on the list suggested defining extra engines and dynamically configuring them on after IPL. We run several different operating systems (z/OS, z/VM, z/VSE, VSEn, Linux on Z) and it seems like a lot of work to learn how (or even if) this can be done for all of them, so we've decided to give your export/import approach a try.

I didn't even know the Export/Import function existed and, after spending an embarrassing amount of time searching for it, eventually realized it's one of those functions available only on the SE and not on the HMC. :-\
