The primary master files are VSAM and we run a lot of batch using CICS EXCI in order (I am told) to facilitate sharing between online and batch and also to avoid reproducing of lot of the business logic already in the online transactions. Sounds like to me there could be opportunities to tune our batch which does run quite slowly, both during the daytime when the onlines are busy and during evening batch when the onlines have quite load transaction volumes.
