As I remember, IBM 3420 drive itself does not generate much heat, but it needs a IBM 3803 Control Unit that dissipate some heat due 5 or 6 boards populated with a lot of MST cards.
I tried to find info about heat generation for 3803/3420 subsystem, but at that time, environmental information isn´t take care, I had no success.
