This is on behalf of a client who is getting data via NJE from a large z/OS
installation. They don’t seem inclined to ask the question so I was hoping to
backdoor it.

Have you contacted Broadcom to ask them? I have supported that product and
still do in
one environment, but I never realized it was using USERDATA. So you may be SOL,
but unless you are running the software with no support or illegally,
Broadcom's support
portal should be where you ask this question.
