I am working on a z/OS email client. The issue I'm running into is I now need to use TLS to an external email server. I issue the STARTTLS and get back the proper response, but when I try to initiate AT-TLS, using the code from th IP Programmer's Guide and reference, I keep getting errors so I'm not sure what I am doing wrong.

This is probably because STARTTLS is bi-modal, it starts unencrypted and then switches to encrypted communications.

Conversely SMTPS (SMTP over TLS on port 465) is TLS encrypted from the get-go.

I don't know if AT-TLS has the ability to support STARTTLS or not.

Do you have the option of using the SMTPS port (TCP 465) instead of SMTP (25) or submission (587)?
