FLOWASM supports SYSIN RECFM=VB and LRECL=255 although SYSLIB must still be FB
LRECL=80.

Note that FLOWASM supports relaxed continuation in your macros (unlike ICTL).

Obviously if the macros are shared with code bases that do not use FLOWASM, it
would be wise to normalize on traditional format statements.

The card reader on the 7090 used a plugboard and read row binary, two words per
row.

The real solution would be RECFM=VB, but last I heard HLASM doesn't support
that.

Does that mean that users *must*code their macros in "traditional" format?
Bummer. Better if it were a pragma in the macro header.
But SYSLIB.  Oops!
What about instream macros. "invoked" or read?

CDC FORTRAN used 1-72 for code (standard) and 73-90 for version + sequence.

That's part of the reason; the rest is that on the 36-bit 70x some row binary
readers (407-rekated) supported only 72 columns.

But you could choose *which* 72, and in what order!

I remember seeing Note to Operator: "Data uses 80 columns; do not read online!"
