Our official IBM MP2003 documentation of the time always called it the
Support Element. It consisted of a desktop PC with a CRT style monitor and
a second internal floppy drive for an optical disk. I don't recall if it
had a CD reader. It ran OS/2 and booted directly into the SE application.
It physically resembled the current HMC and nothing like the current
Thinkpad support elements built into the z9 and z10 cabinets. Our MP2003
did not have any thing inside the cabinet like the current SE.

The internal disks emulated 3380 and 3390 devices much like our current
DS6800 but at a much lower capacity. The only RAID option was full
mirroring to another hard disk and it could not be disabled. The SE
application had an option for managing the hard disks. This included
configuring the hard disks into various sized MVS volumes, sizing the cache,
enabling/disabling components, etc. The hard disks were hard coded to
internal CHPIDs.

We bought our machine shortly before 1999 and ran MVS/ESA on it initially.
With only normal microcode updates (initiated by IBM independent of our
"upgrade" plans), we successfully moved on to OS/390 1.3, 2.5, and finally
2.10. Even though out of support, the machine and software was still
running production until 2011.
