A1. Yes. Some API functions rely on CPACF HW or even pure software
implementation. The question is whether you need those functions. IMHO
it's worth to implement ICSF, since it's free (nuilt in z/OS).
A2. Yes, see above.
Answering another question: IMHO the simplest method to programtically
check existence of given crypto card is to use the function you need. In
case ob HW absence you will get proper reason code. Note, depending on
the function used it can be really tricky to check PROPER card.
Remarks:
Newer card has new functions or support new (longer) key lengths.
The same card model with new microcode can have new functions.
The same card in newer CPC may have newer functions.
Newer cards dropped support for some functions considered as obsolete.
Nowadays the card (actually engine, there are 1 or 2 negines per card)
can work in one of the 3 modes, each mode provides quite different set
on functions.
Performance. Sometimes you may need to worry about number of engines
because of performance issues.
