I would amend Curtis Pew's language with just one word, that shown in majuscules below
Pascal was writtern by Niklaus Wirth as a teaching langjuage to instruct NOVICE programmers in the principles of structured programming. It is much concerned to interdict practices, e.g., GOTOs or unconditional branches, that it deems 'unstructured' or 'anarchic'. Opinions still differ sharply---There has been no design convergence---on what an optimal programming language is. We do, however, know one thing: Requiring students to use a nanny language, be it Pascal or Smalltalk, to pick two very different ones, does not teach them to be good programmers. They can and usually do write opaque, turgid routines in both. -- John Gilmore, Ashland, MA 01721 - USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [email protected] with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
