I owe the List a debt of gratitude. Late in 2013 I rolled out an RSU package that I thought would prepare us for 2.1. While casually perusing this thread, I discovered with growing horror that my maintenance bundle had failed to include the bulk of the FIXCAT list, including hardware support and software conditioning. I'm not sure how I managed to screw up, but this thread clued me in to the gross oversight. Thanks.

"Coexistence" means sharing resources either concurrently or non-concurrently. A sysplex environment is definitely sharing resources, and is covered by "coexistence" requirements. With this in mind, do not try to share z/OS R11 and z/OS V2.1 resources. Do not try to IPL a z/OS R11 system into a sysplex containing z/OS V2.1. Do not try to IPL a z/OS V2.1 system into a sysplex containing z/OS R11. Some people use the term "coexistence" and "toleration" differently, but when I talk about z/OS coexistence these mean the same thing - they mean sharing of any kind between z/OS systems. Running a REPORT MISSINGFIX with the FIXCAT of IBM.Coexistence.z/OS.V2R1 against a z/OS R11 target zone may give you very interesting results, which you cannot interpret as coexistence support! It may be fun and curious to do, if that's what you want, but don't take it further than that. The SMP/E report in this scenario will identify z/OS R11 PTFs for various reasons, none of which you should take to mean that it is coexistence supported. Indeed, it may be confusing that you can run such a report, and get output from it, but that output should not be construed as "if I have these PTFs installed on z/OS R11, I can run in a sysplex with z/OS V2.1". As you see, several of the R11 PTFs in this interesting SMP/E report will be cancelled, and not retrievable with Shopz or SMP/E RECEIVE ORDER. That's actually a good thing, as some folks may take this to mean that z/OS R11 is coexistence support and think that they are "safe" to have z/OS R11 and V2.1 coexist. Keep with what the z/OS Planning for Installation and z/OS Migration books say: three consecutive releases supported for coexistence. That is: z/OS R12, R13, and V2.1. I wish we had a way of getting SMP/E to produce that in a REPORT MISSINGFIX report! -Marna WALLE z/OS Installation IBM Poughkeepsie ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [email protected] with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
