Doubtful regarding your high availability question. True, you are no longer bound to an ESCON pair of type CTC/CNC. FICON has superior features, but if I understand your configuration correctly, I am not sure how much you are gaining as your CTCs still appear to be just two channels.
Are you using a switch? If so, I assume you have other FICON channels in use. You can add FCTC type control units to those existing channels (additional CTCs on alternate paths) to possibly address your high availability.
