My ability to use the integrated console (and operating system messages)

You connect to the HMC - that's half of the success.
Pop-up java windows sometimes tend to loooooooooong wait before appear.
Few minutes is not uncommon.
Hint: when the process is "in progress" the background of the icon you
clicked is slightly animated. We call it "sand". That's the clue you
should waaaaaaaait.
General clue for all possible problems with HMCs and other consoles:
don't fight.
Just use virtual machine with some back-level version of browser and
java, SWITCH OFF all updates, switch on all possible exceptions for your
console IP's, allow pop-up windows, accept your certificates, apply all
other tricks, etc. And don't use it for anything else.
