Matt: (the OP if I got it right) you might also investigate the storage device you already have. For instance, I read [1] in the dox for our DS8870 that the box itself will do the up-conversion on the emulated 3390-x and advise z/OS that it's changed. Don't even think [2] you had to quiesce the z/OS volSer either. I even think it could get the volIndex up-sized on the fly.
