Foot in mouth. I looked again at my replied message from the phone and it does
indeed contain the original text. However, I still cannot find an option to
control this generally. I have both traditional Gmail and the 'Inbox' versions.
In traditional Gmail, I see the boxes Tony refers to on the reply itself. I
don't see them on the Inbox version.

Just a reminder. It's IBM-MAIN etiquette when replying to email to delete the
informational boilerplate appended to the bottom of outbound posts. I forget
sometimes, but it's best behavior to trim each reply.

I have the Gmail Android client. While I only rarely use it to reply, I notice
that it does have a check box "Quote text" (which is checked by default), and a
separate clickable "RESPOND INLINE" that shifts the original text to the top.
None of this is really easy to use, but that's mostly because of the small
(phone in my case) screen and difficulty in selecting and acting on portions of
text.
