It's actually very simple (as a vendor) to tell whether you are running on emulated hardware (i.e. under VM) or not.
I can look up the logic if you need it, but we do it with our software to decide whether or not to take advantage of features of the operating system or not. Under emulation, things don't always operate the same or as fast.
