'Personal use' z/OS has been a recurring theme at SHARE for some time. IBM is
loath to attach words like 'free' or 'personal' to anything in the mainframe
world. What's been made available for individuals is still too costly for
hobby/tinkerer use, especially compare with other platforms. ;-(

I could not agree more. But they don't ask me.

Organized training is good, but it's just a drop in the bucket compared to
someone getting their hands on their own system for as much time as they want.
I think a key to mainframe growth (maybe its survival?) is for IBM to figure
out a way to allow free home usage of z/OS, z/VM, CICS, etc. on Hercules,
without affecting their paid-for market.

That's how people learn Windows/Linux/Android/etc these days - everything they
need is cheap or free. And who knows, if z/OS was available for home use,
maybe some young whipersnapper would have already written the z/OS equivalent
of Inno Setup or apt-get or yum.
