Is SMT a good thing for a SAP invocation? Speaking of z14 servers, would you consider the default number of SAPs on a ZR1 sufficient most of the time?

However, unless you have a very I/O intensive workload e.g. TPF system, normally there is sufficient SAP capacity for Z servers. The other point to note is SAPs on z14 servers also support SMT (Simultaneous Threading) as standard..
