I take exception to the statement "you would need different names anyway".

I have two LPARs on different CECs sharing the same 510RES volume. The first
IPL of the second LPAR was a fairly scary moment, but so far it's worked well
and without problem.

Once you get into the mind-set, running multiple systems from the same sysres
really isn't too long a reach. zOS does it routinely, and all the necessary
features are in zVM as well. SYSTEM CONFIG can be conditioned using the system
serial numbers and names assigned there. The common userid list needs to be
changed, or the sysaffin feature in the CP directory needs to be used to
isolate the common userid's data. Separate checkpoint, warmstart, and CP
Directory areas have to be defined. Separate spool and page needs to be
allocated. But all your systems can IPL the same sysres, if desired.

Unless you're doing a full re-install with each release, I think you
don't want to have system data on a volume named 510RES. In shops with
more than one LPAR you would need different names anyway, so I would
opt for a volser based on the system name rather than the release.
