I take exception to the statement "you would need different names anyway".
I have two LPARs on different CECs sharing the same 510RES volume. The first IPL of the second LPAR was a fairly scary moment, but so far it's worked well and without problem. Once you get into the mind-set, running multiple systems from the same sysres really isn't too long a reach. zOS does it routinely, and all the necessary features are in zVM as well. SYSTEM CONFIG can be conditioned using the system serial numbers and names assigned there. The common userid list needs to be changed, or the sysaffin feature in the CP directory needs to be used to isolate the common userid's data. Separate checkpoint, warmstart, and CP Directory areas have to be defined. Separate spool and page needs to be allocated. But all your systems can IPL the same sysres, if desired. -- Robert P.
