Meeting Location:
NOTE: We are NOT meeting in the same room that we met in last quarter!
This quarter's meeting will be held at the Hewitt Associates 'East
Campus' located at 100 Half Day Road, in Lincolnshire, IL. We will
meet in the 100-M3 Conference Room, just off the cafeteria.

Attendance:
We would like to request a count of expected attendees by the Monday
before the meeting, so that we may plan appropriately for arranging
the facilities, and for refreshments and lunch, should one of the
vendors wish to provide them. If you are planning to attend, PLEASE

9:00 AM z/VM Device Support Overview
Come to this presentation to hear an overview of current device
support available on z/VM Version 5. The speaker will discuss Disk,
Tape, and OSA technologies available for VM system I/O and guest
operating systems running under z/VM. This presentation is also well
suited for an audience new to z/VM.
The speaker will be Mr. Eric Farman of the IBM Corporation.

This presentation brings you up to date on the IBM System Storage
DS6000, an affordable storage solution specifically designed to help
medium and large enterprises simplify their storage infrastructures,
support business continuity, and optimize information life cycle
management. The DS6000 provides both SCSI and FICON attachment,
enabling it to serve the needs of your z/OS, z/VSE, z/VM and Linux
operating systems.
The speaker will be Mr. Eric Farman of the IBM Corporation.

2:00 PM A Starter System for Novell SLES
Almost a year ago, a discussion started on the Linux-390 mailing list
about the difficulty of getting the first Linux system in a System Z
environment working, and the complexity of coordinating all the
CD/DVD, network and other resources to get a working system. After a
long effort, SNA has collaborated with Novell to provide a supported
starter system for SLES 10 SP1 that can be installed with CMS tools
(no CD/DVD needed). The talk will describe the system, the
assumptions and design decisions we made in the process of creating
the starter system, and information on getting the system from the
Novell web site.
The speaker will be Dr. David Boyes of Sine Nomine Associates.

3:30 PM Open Source Backup
As Linux moves into the production environment, the question of
backup and restore capability for individual files and applications
has become more critical; the full-volume dump tools available in
z/OS and z/VM have a number of difficulties that make them unpleasant
to use for backup of running systems in production. There are a few
commercial solutions, but there are also sophisticated open source
solutions available to provide file level and image level backup for
running Linux systems in combination with a little help from CMS and
z/VM. The talk will describe some of the commercial landscape
options, and describe several of the open source options available.
We'll look closely at Bacula and see how to implement it in a
production environment.

Members will attempt to answer any reasonable VM or hardware related
questions. If you are having a problem and want to find out if others
are experiencing it, or you are installing new hardware or software
and want to find out what types of problems others have experienced,
here is the place to find out.
Members are encouraged to bring ideas for future presentations and
speakers to this meeting.
