After converting to z/VM 5.1 brought up the old VM/ESA 2.4.0 system second level to be sure that we had a way to get at old files.
I just attempted to IPL our old VM/ESA 2.4.0 sysres from z/VM 5.1 second level and it started up until the Cold/Warm/etc. prompt at which point I just logged off (no spool, etc defined so the full IPL would be fruitless). Note that it would not work the other way around... z/VM 5.anything requires zArchitecture hardware, which VM/ESA cannot virtualize. During this I was told not to change anything so we are behind in upgrades, freeze all maintenance. Well I have just been informed this is not going well. Now management is looking to convert a 90% assembler application to Cobol. Our current environment consists of zVM 4.3 and VSE/ESA 2.5. Currently because of time constraints we want to keep our current hardware but get supported. Can this be done and what releases are we talking about? I think that it would be zVM 4.4 and VSE/ESA 2.6, am I correct and can this be ordered?
