Chris, My recall of the general guidance from the list over the years is to define your OWN filepool with it's own filespaces for _your_ SFS applications. That way they are independent of anything IBM might do to the IBM-supplied SFS servers.
That said, since DFSMS/VM is IBM-supplied, that was the sole product that we installed into IBM SFS servers. And... it served as a nice confirmation that the IBM servers were working as designed. DFSMS/VM has some parts on minidisks, and REQUIRES some parts in filespaces. IMHO, the requirement for SFS when only running DFSMS/VM for managing VTLs or VTSs makes the while thing overly complicated. But just as many products are installed with z/VM whether you need them or not, a consistent standard is probably easier for IBM to package and maintain. I notice that it requires the VMSYS file pool. When I installed VM many months ago, I selected to install to minidisks instead of SFS. As a result, the SFS subsystem is not active or configured. My question: Is there a way to easily create the required SFS environment/pools or would re-installing VM and selecting SFS be required?
