Like Mike, and I am sure many others, I have also skipped
far more releases than I have installed. (I won't try to list
what I skipped, I think the list I have installed is: VM/SP
3, 5, 5-HPO, VM/ESA 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.4, z/VM 4.2, 4.4).

In any case, the question "can you go from X to Y" does
not seem appropriate to changes in VM, since they are
basically new installs every time. There is the subject
of spool file compatability, what release will still be
able to read the spool files of the old system, but other
than that (which has never bothered me, since I do not
believe in using spool as alternate file storage) I don't
know what difference it makes who X and Y are.
