It seems two commands were needed. The ATTACH A40E SYSTEM first. That looks as if it worked.
I've tried ATT A40E SYSTEM with no luck : DASD A40E ATTACHED TO SYSTEM LNX015 PAV BASE That is good. It just says there is a PAV defined for A40E where A40E is the base. You reload the directory for the z/Linux guest Then issue the #CP LINK * 120 102 M from the z/Linux guest. That seems to not have worked because the ATTACH was not issued first. When VM IPLs all DASD that have that match the labels in the User_Volume_Label tags are attached to system in a similar fashion automatically.
