... because DIRECTXA looks at the ALLOCATION MAP on the volume to find the 
DRCT area.  Kind of prehistoric, after a fashion, but it makes sense when 
you remember that DIRECTXA is also designed to run standalone.

As an experiment in the lab (always wear eye protection and use a fume 
hood):
1. Create a 1-cyl minidisk immediately in front of the DRCT area
2. Create a mindisk that deliberately and with malice of forethought 
overlaps both areas.
3. Link the 1-cyl disk, CPFMXTXA FORMAT, then DETACH
4. Link to the the mdisk that overlaps BOTH.
5. Then CPFMTXA ALLOC cyls 1-END as DRCT. 

In theory, you now have a minidisk that doesn't expose the entire volume 
but can be used by DIRECTXA.

It'd be nicer if DIRECTXA had an option to say "I know it's a minidisk. 
Now shut up and use it."
