Leland, Please define "dedicated".
IIUC, "dedicated" really pertains to the LPAR definition. If an engine/CPU of any type) is "dedicated" at the LPAR definition and the HMC, that LPAR is only place it can be used. If the engine/CPU is not dedicated, then it can be varied off one LPAR, and varied on to a different LPAR. But as I understand it at this time, when you vary a CPU offline from an LPAR, you are actually varying a real physical **CPU's worth of resources** offline to one LPAR, and onto another LPAR. Unless the physical CPU is dedicated in the LPAR definition, PR/SM is handing you virtualized CPUs, not real CPUs. LPAR weighting may be a better direction that varying CPUs on and offline to affect performance. And weighting is dynamic, much faster than anyone entering vary commands. At one point in the distant past, messages from PR/SM were issued with the prefix "DMK"... the precursor to today's "HCP". One could easily see PR/SM's dyed roots showing. :-) Now I'll sit back and let the experts tell me what I've misunderstood _this_ time. If we define multiple z/VM LPARs with dedicated IFLs, can those IFLs be moved from one LPAR to another? Is it as simple as "vary off..." and "vary on..."?
