Harnett County TLAER Course Information

Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue Training offers training
nationwide for emergency response community members such as
firefighters, rescue squads, law enforcement officers, animal control
and wildlife officers, large animal veterinarians, equine owners and
enthusiasts, and members of the general public. Over the last 10
years, the emergency community has begun to respond to these types of
common incidents as the public has adopted a "9-1-1 call does it all"
mentality, and have expressed a need for awareness and operational
training in this specialty.

What the TLAER training course does is bring together in four days
all of the latest concepts and equipment being used today, practical
techniques and hands-on training, introduction to equine behavior and
handling, and compiles them into a real emergency scenario based
training course using live horses as the demonstration animals.
People tend to become less concerned with the rescue effort when a
mannequin or other simulated victim is used in this type of training
due to the lack of attention given to rescuer safety when it comes to
the mannequin not moving versus a real horse biting, kicking,
thrashing and possibly causing injury or death also the lack of
attention to the duration of the rescue since the mannequin is not a
living breathing animal. TLAER is fortunate to have trained
demonstration animals (several horses and a llama) that are used to
provide realistic hands-on training to students of our courses. These
animals are raised from birth using the Imprinting methods of Dr.
Robert Miller, and desensitization / familiarization methods espoused
by Ray Hunt, Tom and Bill Dorrance and taught through Parelli Savvy
Horsemanship methods. The horses to their first public training at
about 6 months of age and from then on are a permanent part of the
demonstration team.

TLAER teaches those in attendance how to more safely prepare for and
approach various large animal incidents such as overturned and
wrecked trailers or livestock haulers, large animals loose on the
road, large animals stuck in mud, ravines, high water or flood
situations, and incidents where people might be trapped with the
animal. There are too many stories of good-intended "heroic rescues"
where the animal or it's rescuer is injured during the rescue, or
even killed do to lack of training and improper rescue techniques
being applied.

TLAER teaches people about behavior of large animals in rescue
situations, how to use the equipment the local emergency department
already owns to solve TLAER incidents, and how to interact with other
resources that may already exist in your community to find an
appropriate solution.

No previous emergency services training or large animal handling
experience necessary!

TLAER offers training for firefighters, rescue squads, law
enforcement officers, animal control officers, wildlife officers,
veterinarians, livestock owners and the general public.
