I would agree that feeding by weight is really helpful and quite surprising
to many people how much or little a flake can weigh.  Once you have
practiced using the scales for a while you can fairly accurately judge how
much a flake of hay weighs.  

In the winter we feed more but generally our horses get about 12-15 pounds
per day of a grassy/mix hay.  Then of course it does depend on the horse -
their age and general condition and the weather.  But it gives you a
starting point and concrete reference.
