a problem if you need spine clearance is if the saddle or saddle pad
shifts even a little it puts the shim ON the spine instead of
clearance on the spine.  This can cause rubbing in a horse with
prominent spine.  Even a dixie midnight can rub the spine if a horse
has problems there.  and in a treeless, if you weigh a lot, your
weight is gonna press down so that shims may be a moot point. just
fyi.
