Honestly, using templates will likely save your sanity ... particularly in
trying to chase down "silly" errors or manage giant configurations. You can
still get "under the hood" with Icinga, as each and every configuration
variable (essentially) is available to you in every host and service
definition, anyway... but good chains of inheritance, in the long run, will
make your life easier by factors of magnitude (as well as decrease the
overall maintenance and stability issues you may have further in the
future). At least, that's generally been my experience from Nagios 2.x/3.x
as well as in to Icinga.
