Solved my own problem! Could not for the life of me figure it out but on
a hunch I took this as an opportunity to dump sendmail and install postfix.
2 minutes later and it works fine :-) "mailq" returns instantly as it
should, and alerts are working fine.
I've only been here 2 months and have been aching to replace sendmail with
postfix ...
