If you use Icinga-Web, there's a built-in filter that does the job. Very 
convenient.

Right.   Thanks for the tip!
I did find some perl code/modules which parse that file and print some useful 
output, but they were designed to ignore 'acknowledged' and 'disabled' 
hosts/services.  So, I modified the module to print everything, including those 
useful states.
I hope someone else finds it useful!   (attached module, along with sample code)

A grep for 'problem_has_been_acknowledged=1' in the status file might be your 
friend?

It seems like it would be easy to disable a notification for maintenance, and 
forget to re-enable the service/host checks or notifications.
