Greater New York Dinghy Regatta - April 22-23, 2006
Host: Fordham University
HISTORY: Formerly known as the Greater New York Dinghy Championship for
college Sailing teams in the Greater New York City Area, this event dates back
to
1948 and was hosted by Kings Point until 1978. In 2002, it was revived by
Fordham University and the perpetual trophy, which remains on display at the
Vincent T. Lombardi Memorial Center at Fordham's Rose Hill campus, was deeded
to
Fordham by Kings Point. Kings Point won in 2002 and 2003, while Fordham took
top
honors in 2004 and 2005. This year New York Maritime claimed the prize.
REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: With an 80% chance of rain and southeasterly winds of 25
-35 knots forecast, we knew that Eastchester Bay would probably get hammered,
so Danny Pletsch at NY Maritime graciously came to the rescue and while
hosting the MAISA Women's Championship, provided our event with nine 420s and a
safer sailing venue. Courses were windward - leeward and seven races were
sailed
before the current became so strong, that our marks were being dragged as far
as 100 yards downstream. After an hour of unsuccessfully trying to secure the
marks, the Race Committee elected to abandon racing for the day and announced
that the competition would continue at Fordham's home port, Morris Yacht &
Beach Club on City Island on Sunday morning. At the time, Fordham had a
two-point
lead over New York Maritime and there were no ties. On Sunday, after three
hours of waiting, with three-four foot seas; east-southeast winds of 17-20
knots;
gusts of 20-30; steady rain and intermittent downpours, the regatta was
canceled. Since only three B Division races were sailed, Race 4A was disallowed
resulting in a victory for New York Maritime and a three-way tie for 6th place
among Army, Monmouth and Webb. Procedural rules were used to break the tie.
Participating teams were treated to H&H Bagels, Cream Cheese and juice on
both mornings and steaming hot bowls of New England Clam Chowder and Italian
bread from the Shrimp Box on City Island on Saturday.
Special thanks to MY&BC Vice Commodore Paul Laddomada, who provided the Race
Committee boat for the weekend; US Sailing Judge Jim Ryan; Danny Pletsch and
his staff at NY Maritime; John McAndrews '71, who came through with two tanks
of gas when the marinas were closed; Fordham sailors Colin Morse, Will Nazar,
Kendra White Alex Baum and Ram-to-be Dave Purinton '10, who pitched in to help
execute a successful regatta under trying circumstances.
